Hi Parkinson,
I hope you are all well and have had a
good break.
Today's work is as follows:
Maths
Adding and subtracting mixed number
fractions: Remember to partition the integer (whole number) from the fractions
and then add/subtract each part separately. And of course, you cannot add or
subtract fractions until they share a common denominator. Here is an example:
2 4/5 -
1 1/3
= 2 12/15 -
1 5/15
Now that the denominators have been
converted - along with the numerators - you can partition the integer and the
fraction and complete the question (remember to add the two parts back
together!):
2 - 1 = 1
12/15 - 5/15 = 7/15
The answer is 1 7/15
Some of you might also want to try
converting the questions into improper fractions to calculate - let's look at
the same example again:
24/5 - 11/3 = 14/5 - 4/3 (2
wholes are 10/5 + the fraction 4/5 = 14/5)
42/15 - 20/15 = 22/15 (Now
convert the denominators - remember, whatever you do to the denominator, you
must do to the numerator!)
22/15 is
equal to 1 7/15

Reading
You have two texts to read and answer
questions on - poetry and non-fiction.
Remember to use the inference skills we
have been building on in recent lessons to help you identify clues as to the
meaning of words that you are unfamiliar with.
Also, remember when giving your
impression - or what you think - do not simply quote the text back - find
synonyms that help to describe the meaning of the text.
If you need any help at all, with maths
or reading - or anything else - I am available at the year 6 email address,
which is:
year6.year6@hovingham.org
