Good Morning guys,
Todays maths work is a refresher on rounding and place value - it's so important that we always revisit the things we have learnt so that we do not forget them!
Rounding rules:
If a number ends in 4 or more, let it soar - we round up to the next ten.
If a number ends in 5 or less, let it rest - we round down to the ten that is in the number.
5 steps for rounding a number:
1. Work out what you are rounding to i.e. the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000
2. Circle the column (number) that you are rounding to
Example: round 456 to the nearest 100.
I would circle the hundreds column (400) represented by the 4 digit.
3. As you are rounding to the nearest 100, work out how many hundreds are in the number if we are rounding down (let it rest) and work out what the next hundred would be if we are rounding up (let it soar).
Example: 456
400 (the hundreds in the number) and 500 (the next hundred)
4. Now look at the number to the right of the digit you are rounding to, this will tell you if you are rounding up or down.
Example: 456 - we would look at the 5.
5. 4 or less, let it rest,
5 or more, let it soar
The number is a 5, so I would round up to the next hundred.
456 rounded to the nearest 100, would be 500.

Expanded form
What does the word expand mean?
It means we make something larger.
So, when we write a number in expanded form, we partition the number into its place value columns.
Example: 4576 = 4000 + 500 + 70 + 6.

The answer sheets are on the second page of each document so you can check these with somebody at home.
Take care,
Miss Freeman
